Casa G – Roccamare

BEGINNING FROM A NEW STAIRCASE

The restructuring of the villa in Roccamare, along the Tuscan Tyrrhenian coast, focuses on a recovery of the rational atmosphere of the sixties, when the homonymous pinewood saw the birth of modern villas by the beach. Straddling of a dune, the house shows a flat roof and exposed stone. It has two levels that remained for years without an internal connection, one towards the sea and the other oriented toward the pinewood and the outback. The project aims to reconsider the site plan so as to make the lowest level more airy, bright and usable as well as establishing a new internal connection between the two levels. The core element of the project is the construction of a new travertine staircase that makes the two plans independent when required and slides at the lowest level in a completely renovated environment. Knocking down a wall near the staircase, that previously delimited a dead compartment between the living room and the kitchen and removing a portion of a floor of the staircase area, the project yields a double volume that illuminates with natural light a part of the dark living area. A mural panel has been inserted exactly in this new extension of space. This panel has been obtained by reusing some pale green tiles already present in the house that through an oblique cut and combined with the travertine, animates an area with no value before. Using the same materials, the bathrooms have been restructured to reach that lost uniformity.
